importance of symbolism

I feel that symbolism is an important part of our every day lives from product logos to the political parties donkey and elephant. Symbolism are what help us interpret meaing to something without words. Symbols themselves is like a universal language that everyone can understand and is how some people can comunicate with others that don't even speak the same language. As I was reading the story Young Goodman brown i kept see refrences to faith's pink ribbons and I would sit there and wonder why do they keep talking about some dumb old ribbons? It wasn't until later on when the ribons where saw floating away did I realize what it ment. Some symbolism you need to come back to multiple times before you can actually see the big picture in what it means. Symbolism has been around for as long as man has starting with prehistoric man. There wasn't any form of written or spoken language but they were able to communicate through drawing a picture of what they wanted to say. Religons have symols like the cross to represent christianity. Even to this day some people have a family crest to sybolize where there roots are from.
